   A Little History

In 1972 Carl Frahme had a brainstorm and co-founded Ceramic Correspondence Institute to offer training in basic ceramic technology to the industry. Carl and his associates saw a crying need for such training, particularly for production supervisors, technicians, and others with no formal training in ceramic technology. There simply was no place for these people to get such training. CCI was a great success, because the unfilled need did in fact exist. In 1987 CCI was sold to The American Ceramic Society, which still operates it. CCI has served over 2000 students in more than 40 countries. Not only have ceramic supervisors and technicians taken courses, but engineers from other fields, sales personnel, secretaries, artists, and other "unexpected" types have enrolled. In 1972 CCI was started with the latest in technology- an IBM Selectric typewriter and a quick-print shop.

Times Have Changed!

Have they ever!! Although courses by correspondence still fill a need and are viable, they do have a few shortcomings. It is difficult to have timely interaction between a student and instructor. Updating course material is slow and tedious. Using color and fancy graphics and photographs is expensive. Accessing additional material is cumbersome and is left to the student via libraries, etc.

Enter the Internet

As all of us are aware, there has been a true revolution in information technology via the Internet. On-line everything, some of it bad and some great, is available electronically. The impact on education and training is only beginning to become evident, and not much is in place yet. But FCS believes that this medium will have the same impact on training in ceramic technology that CCI initiated. Student-teacher interaction can be quick, if not instantaneous. Course material updates and additions are done electronically and as quickly as the material can be prepared. Color, graphics, animation, video, and sound are all readily available.

The Ultimate Training Service for the Ceramic Industry

By joining forces, WCU and CCI now offer the ultimate in training services for the ceramic industry. On-line, fully updated courses offered via the Internet. For a more complete review of the history of CCI, link to CCI History.
